A Paraguay immigration lawyer is not required for residency: Migraciones does not require legal representation. The application is made in person, and follow-up can be done personally or through a representative with a power of attorney.

Wanting help is a different question, and it is a question of time, language and document logistics, not a legal obligation.

When a Paraguay immigration lawyer or law firm does add value

Some cases are legal rather than administrative.

A criminal record in the file. A change of name, or a mismatch between documents from different countries. Family situations with minors, or a parent–child relationship that has to be proven. A previous refusal that has to be appealed.

In those cases what you need is legal judgement, and paying for it is reasonable.

When you do not need one

The ordinary file is documentary: apostille, sworn translation, submission, the cédula appointment. There is no point of law to resolve, and adding a law firm's fee does not speed up Migraciones or improve the outcome.

For that case, what describes the work is a residency agency.

What no immigration lawyer or agency can promise you

Approval. Migraciones states expressly that submitting documents does not presume approval and that it may ask for further documentation. A lawyer who guarantees the outcome without having validated your documents first is guaranteeing a decision that is not theirs to make. We guarantee approval only once your documents have passed official pre-approval, and we put that in the contract.

Nor the timing. The official fees — Gs. 2,926,925, or Gs. 2,341,540 on the MERCOSUR route — are the same for everyone, and so is the authority's pace.

What to ask before you hire anyone

Ask for the quote split into official fees and professional fee. Ask whether the price includes the cédula or stops at residency. Ask how many trips it assumes. And ask what happens if the file comes back with observations.

They are the same questions we would ask anyone, and they apply to us just as much. The requirements are published so you can check the numbers yourself.

Common questions

Do I need a lawyer for Paraguayan residency?
No. Migraciones does not require legal representation. The application is made in person, and follow-up can be done personally or through a representative with a power of attorney. Wanting help is a question of time, language and document logistics, not a legal obligation.
When is a Paraguay immigration lawyer worth it?
When the problem is legal: a criminal record in the file, mismatches between documents from different countries, a change of name, proving a parent–child relationship, or appealing a previous refusal.
Does a lawyer speed up Migraciones?
No. The fees and the authority’s pace are the same for everyone. What changes is how the file is prepared, not how fast it is decided.
